Yunilen Phonetic System

I created the Yunilen Phonetic System in the year 2000, while attempting to create a new language. I was inspired by the Japanese romanji system and sought to create something simple and very easy to use. I have used this system to help me learn foreign languages and am sharing it for other people to use.

The table below lists all the possible combinations of the phonetic alphabets, and the closest phoneme equivalent in the English language of that combination. If you wish to write the pronunciation for the word “bar”, you will write “ba”. Likewise, if you wish to write the  pronunciation for “computer”, you will write “kompyutq”.

* This vowel does not feature in the English language. It sounds like a quick ‘q’ (‘er’) but slightly different. We have a few examples of how to express this vowel:
•    The shortened version of the sound expressed when one dies after being shot in the movies
•    The Chinese words: shi (die), shi (yes, is)

Simple words

When writing Yunilen, always write in small capital letters. Each phoneme is represented by a single letter.

  • apple = vowel + consonant + vowel = e + p + q = epq
  • chicken = cikqn
  • christmas = krismqs
  • computer = kompyutq
  • cow = kau
  • dictionary = diksqnqri
  • glory = grori
  • maintain = menten
  • move = muf
  • newspaper = nyuspepq
  • sector = sektq
  • observe = obsqf
  • accomplish = qkomplis
  • complete = komplit
  • multimedia = mautimidyq
  • proclaim = proklem
  • stimulate = stimyulet
  • pilot = pailqt

Words with elongation or shortening

To speed up the phoneme, add an exclamation mark after the phoneme. To slow it down, add a dash. We can add more than one exclamation mark or dash. Below are some examples:

  • full = consonant + vowel ‘u’ + vowel ‘u’ = consonant + vowel ‘u’ + extension =  fu-
  • aversion = evqsqn!
  • fish = fis-
  • pear = pe-
  • harry = he-ri
  • happy = he!pi
  • hijack = hai-zek
  • height = hait!
  • memory = mem!q!ri
  • radiant = rediyqnt!
  • sad = sed!
  • sat = sat!
  • tall = to-
  • time = ta!i!m
  • vaccine = vek!s-in
  • orchard = o-cq!d!
  • nuclear = nyukyq-
  • sword = suwod!
  • productivity = produk!tiviti

Pronouncing Mandarin Chinese

The Chinese language uses 4 different tones according to the HanYi-PinYin (HYPY) Phonetic system. The table below shows some examples on how to translate them into the Yunilen system. (T refers to the tone and word refers to the HYPT word in question).

T\W a sha tian shou zhou
1 ar! shar! (sand) tyen! (sky) swou!! (speak) zou! (porridge)
2 ar shar (stupid) tyen (sweet) swou! (every) zou (needle’s eye)
3 a- sha- (carefree) tye-n (lick) swo (lock) zo- (walk)
4 a! sha! (kill) tye!n swo! (shrink) zo! (bash)

Transliteration of Sutra

As another example, I have transliterated the Mandarin version of the Great Compassionate Sutra using Yunilen.
